The truck senses this and goes into a "regen". This occurs when the truck dumps extra amount of fuel into the cylinders on one side of the engine to raise EGTs to 1000 degrees. This basically incinerates all of the particulate matter in the filter, which goes out the tailpipe. Once the filter is clean, the regen stops.
With the newer CR-TDI engines there are 2 different types of regenerations available depending on the actual soot mass/load. If either the calculated or measured soot mass is above 30g but below 40g you can initiate a regeneration while standing (Idle will be raised etc.), a forced regeneration while driving is also possible.
Active regeneration can last 5 to 10 minutes, whilst you would need to drive for 15 minutes or more at a speed of 40mph or higher to trigger passive regeneration and allow the regeneration cycle to complete. Your DPF will not be able to complete the cycle if: There isn't enough fuel in the fuel tank. The fuel light is on.
